This ratio
pertains to how many times the spool turns per every turn of the handle. A gear
ratio of 5.1:1, for example, means the spool inside the reel turns 5.1 times

If you are
mostly using big baits, it is ideal to have a low gear ratio, from 5.1:1 to
5.4:1. This allows you to exert less effort on retrieving the bait and more on
finding the fish. It is also good for fishing in deep water as a slow reel
helps in keeping your bait in the strike zone longer.
For shallow
to medium depth fishing, get a medium gear ratio, from 6.1:1 to 6.4:1. This is
great for moving the bait fast, to get the most aggressive fish to react. When
using any lure that works in conjunction with your rod, having a high gear
ratio from 7.1:1 to 8.1:1 is the perfect choice. This helps you muster all the
speed you can to quickly pull the fish away from any line-fraying hazards.
