Quality Fishing Tackle—A Must-Have for Challengers of the Samson Fish!

Fishing is an activity that you can take to opposite extremes. On one end, you can go fishing to have a quiet and relaxing time, waiting for a fish to bite while you enjoy a cold bottle of beer. On the other side of the spectrum, there’s sportfishing—a wonderful way for you to feel alive with adrenaline rushing through your veins and to physically challenge yourself as you go into a tug-of-war with a strong fish. In the waters of Western Australia, there’s a fish that even former Olympian and record holder Emma George found fascinating.

Braided Fishing Line: What you need to know

When anglers choose a particular type of braid, they often look at breaking strain, how well it casts, and to a lesser degree colour and knot strength. When you consider that you’re main line is probably the most important part of your fishing gear, having an in-depth knowledge of what your spooling onto your favourite fishing reels can certainly help contribute to your fishing success. Dan Kaggelis of Fishing Monthly, says few anglers fully understand the right braid to use for certain fish. Kaggelis gives a good rundown on braided fishing lines, more importantly the right ones to be spooled on good fishing reels.

The Perfect Fishing Tackle in Australia for Catching a Dusky Flathead

At first sight, you won’t even notice their presence deep in the sea floor. But when a prey comes too close, the hungry dusky flathead emerges, propelled forward by its powerful tail, and traps the helpless prey in its strong jaws and swallows it whole. It might arguably be the best hunter of the sea, the dusky flathead, but this hunter becomes the hunted, especially for fishing enthusiasts. Over at Fishing Australia, Graham Fifield shares his experience of hunting the hunter—and offers some tips on the type of fishing tackle perfect for catching a dusky flathead: Ensure you have the correct weight of jig head on the lure. Too light and the lure may get caught in the current or wind and rarely hit the bottom. Too heavy and a flathead may not have time to swallow the lure – flathead will usually grab a lure as it sinks and a heavy weight will leave it falling too fast.

Get ‘Powerful’ Fishing Rods for this year’s Black Marlin Season!

The Giant Black Marlin fishing season in Cairns, Queensland, which typically lasts from September to December, is in full swing. Even in mid-season, anglers from all over the world report catches of 400 and 450 lb marlins in their trips to the Great Barrier Reef. Fishing World Live captures a piece of the action and gives a glimpse into a fishing trip headed by Captain Billy Bolson and the crew of the Viking II. The video demonstrates the thrills and challenges other anglers will expect in this season, particularly the bit when they have to reel in a massive fish, which clearly has a lot of fight in it, before tagging and releasing it into the ocean. Simply, it takes a lot of guts and teamwork for anglers to face off against some of the largest game fishes in the world. That said, those looking to join the fray are also advised to get their hands on the best fishing rods before they set off on this adventure.

Things you should have in your Tackle Box

When it comes to fishing, having the right tools can significantly increase your chances of nabbing the best and biggest catch you’ve scored thus far. For starters, you should know what to include in your tackle box.

Extra Line

Always have an extra length of fishing line or two, just in case yours gets worn or snaps from the weight or the struggle of your catch. Likewise, be sure to know what line is best used for the kind of environment you’ll be fishing in, and the kind of swimmers you’ll be dealing with. Keep this rule of thumb in mind: the rougher the waters, the sturdier the line.

Get the Right Gear Ratio When Buying Fishing Reels

For anglers, may it be sports fishers or just plain hobbyists, buying a new fishing reel can get overwhelming. There are different types to choose from, but one of the most important things to consider is if the reel has the right gear ratio.

This ratio pertains to how many times the spool turns per every turn of the handle. A gear ratio of 5.1:1, for example, means the spool inside the reel turns 5.1 times each time you turn the handle. So knowing the right combination can complement or deter your fishing skills.

Cast Away: Considerations When Picking Rods

Hobbyist anglers often turn to fishing rods to snare their catch; compared to traditional tackle such as nets and spears, fishing rods are better suited for sport fishing and for recreation. Modern rods are equipped with lines and reels to draw in caught fish, as well as a combination of terminal tackle such as hooks, sinkers, baits, and lures. As indispensable tools in any angler’s arsenal, a lot of considerations have to be made in choosing a rod.

Not all rods are made the same; indeed, there are different types of fishing rods for various situations. Each rod type has varying specifications, allowing anglers to use them for specific cases such as ice fishing or in-shore fishing. Two of the most popular types of rods among anglers are the spin casting and the spinning rods.

Spin and bait casting rods are fitted with a spin casting reel mounted above the rod, and are traditionally considered better for heavier and stronger fish. Spinning rods, on the other hand, are rods made especially for spinning reels that hang beneath the rod, and are made for comfortable long periods of fishing. Anglers should not be tied to using one rod every single time and should consider bringing multiple rods to allow switching as the situation demands.

Fishing Hooks: Popular Types

All fishing hooks seem identical to first-timers, but there’s more to fishing tackles than meets the eye. Fishing hooks come in a variety of sizes, and it’s not just about finding a big one or a small one—you have to find the right type as well.

Choosing a fishing hook is dependent on several factors, such as the fish size, fish species, type of bait and fishing structure. Here are some of the popular fish hooks:

O’Shaugnessy
This hook is used for general bottom fishing. It’s relatively thick and strong and durable enough not to bend out of shape.

Aberdeen
This type of hooks is used in freshwater fishing, but can also be used by saltwater anglers. These hooks bend and hold quite well.

Circle
Circle hooks enable an easy catch and release. They’re easy to use and prevent the fish from being hooked in the gut.

Live Bait
The hooks have a shorter shank than the rest and allow bait to swim more freely. They also enable a chance of good release, unlike other ones that result in gut hooks.

Kahle
This hook is characterized by a curve that is ideal for live bait.

Your hook choice depends on the physical characteristics of the fish. It’s best to have several types on deck if you’re planning on reeling in different kinds of fish.

Planning Your Fishing Trip

The work week can get exhausting, so what better way to restore your form than to reward yourself with a weekend of adventure. Nothing says fun like a family fishing trip. It gives you the perfect opportunity to experience nature while bonding with your family.

However, like most family outings, you will need a plan. You need to come up with a rough itinerary that you will follow, otherwise, things can get overwhelming. Here’s how to go about it:

Supplies
Make a list of things you plan on bringing for your fishing trip. Common items would include clothing and essentials – overnight bag, waterproof footwear, sunglasses, rain suit, toiletries, insect repellent and fishing gear like bait, rods, reels, lines, leaders and tackles.

Tides
Know what the tides will be on the day you’ll be fishing. Knowing when the tides change in the location you choose is crucial in making a big catch during your trip.

Location
The availability of fish in a certain location will depend on the season. Different climates attract different types of fish.

Going on a fishing trip with family or friends can be easy if you plan it properly and have the right supplies. Sporting goods shops and specialty stores typically carry fishing equipment and other essentials for your trip such as fishing reels, baits, lines, tackles and the like.

A Beginner’s Guide to Shore Fishing in Australia

Shore or beach fishing in Australia is turning into a popular activity for beginners. Generally regarded as land-based fishing, shore fishing enables you to catch the finest fish native to the area with the convenience of having both feet on solid ground. This allows first-timers to practice the right technique and find their comfort zone while enjoying the thrills of fishing.

The first step is learning how to read the beach. Find a spot where you can have an excellent view of gutters, shallow sand banks, or rip areas in the beach and you’ll have a clue where fish will be plentiful. Also be mindful of the changes due to weather and the tides or you’ll be left fishing in an empty spot.

Learning about the right type of fishing equipment to use is vital to a successful fishing trip. You have to know which baits, lures, and berley best suit your fishing spot, as some baits appeal more to particular species of fish. Rods and reels are more of a personal preference; these instruments allow you to cleanly cast baits while having enough sensitivity that enables you to feel the bite.

The most important thing to keep in mind as a beginner is that shore fishing can be a rewarding learning experience. If you are looking for fishing instruments in Australia, online supply companies such as Bid2Fish offer high-quality, cheap fishing tackle in auctions. You can start fishing for mulloway, salmon, and tailor without going above the budget.

Choosing a Rod for Your Saltwater Fishing Trip

If your idea of a good weekend is a nice saltwater fishing trip along Perth with your family and friends or just by yourself, investing in a good fishing rod and tackle will improve your overall experience. Here are some things to consider in choosing your equipment.

  • Action: This refers to how far the rod will bend when you’re catching or reeling in a fish. Knowing the action of your tackle will tell you the maximum weight of the fish the rod can reel in and how far your bait will go when you throw it in the water.

  • Power: This refers to the ability of the rod to hold the lure. Rods are classified from ultra-light to ultra-heavy. In saltwater fishing, bigger lures yield better results, so you may want to use an ultra-heavy rod.

  • Type of Fish: Decide on what type of fish you want to catch in a certain area. Determining their size range and their probable weight can be a factor in choosing the right action and power of your tackle.

  • Budget: Always consider how much you are willing to spend on your fishing tackle. There is no need to break the bank for quality fishing equipment. Affordable and quality fishing tackles are available in Perth.

Now you can fully enjoy your saltwater fishing trip with the assurance of a good fishing rod and tackle set.

Always Have These Items in Your Fishing Tackle!

You may be an excellent angler or an avid outdoorsman with a knack for fishing, but you can’t hope for a huge catch without some high-quality equipment in your fishing tackle. Here is a rough list of items that you should always have whenever you’re out fishing in Australia’s lakes and rivers:

Fishing hooks are at the top, because the hooks you bring should reflect the type of fish you want to catch for the day. Generally speaking, small fish can be caught using small hooks, while large fish need large hooks. Having some extra fishing lines is also useful in case your line breaks or gets tangled during the trip.

Meanwhile, fishing lures, like spinners and spoons, are only necessary if you want to catch larger fish. Though you can always rely on the old-fashioned way of using live bait, larger fish are more likely to be lured by imitations of their favourite prey like minnows. You might also want to bring a few sinkers along so that your hook and line will sink faster once they touch the water. Technically, you only need one sinker for the duration of your trip, but it wouldn’t hurt to have few spares on hand in case you lose one.

Don’t forget to bring a pair of clippers and needle-nose pliers as well, since you’ll need them to cut the line and hook (respectively) on your fishing rod whenever the situation demands it.

How to Save Money While Fishing

Fishing is one of the most popular pastimes in Australia. As most anglers know, however, it’s not exactly a cheap hobby. According to statistics, recreational fishing represents a $2.2 billion industry. That’s a lot of money to spend, indeed!

Fortunately, there are certain things you can do to make this fun activity friendlier on the pocket. Below are a few of them:

Cultivate Your Own Lure
Earthworms are the classic fishing lure, but you don’t necessarily have to buy them before heading out on a fishing trip. If you have a garden, you can cultivate earthworms in your own backyard.

Explore Local Fishing Spots
One of the biggest lures of fishing is the opportunity to visit various fishing locales around the country. Like all trips, though, it will cost you money. If you’re working with a tighter budget, why not explore local fishing spots instead? Who knows, your next big catch might just be lurking at the local lake!

Buy Supplies Online
Brand-new fishing gear can be rather expensive, which is why many people buy second-hand equipment. Fortunately, there are now auction sites that specialise in listing fishing gear like reels and rods. By purchasing from these sources, you can get top-notch gear at considerably lower prices.

Hopefully, these tips will allow you to embark on your next fishing trip with a happy heart and a heavy wallet.

The Fight You’ve Never Fought

You’ve probably thought about it a million, million times in the past. You already know how that moment might feel. You’ve already visualised the scene in your head so many times that you know just how it will play out. Each time, you see the prize in your possession, your tired arms burning, your legs hurting, but a smile still etched solidly across your face.

You know in your heart, though, that it’s always been more than just about that prize. It was the fight that led to it that really mattered, and it all begun on a boat slicing steadily across the open ocean, pitching sideways to and fro with the waves.

It was a fierce hiss that alerted you to the fact that the fight was on. Just like a bell at a boxing match, the moment it started, sitting around was no longer an option. It was time for action.

Quickly, you make a grab for the handle and arrest the line, and with one strong tug of the pole with your other hand, you set the hook. With that, the fish makes a sudden turn to get away—the fight is on—and for who knows how many hours, you battle away between huffs and puffs until you finally reel it in.

You’re victorious! Except it’s only in your dreams. Out there, there’s that fish waiting for you. All you need is a fishing tackle to get in the game. So, what are you waiting for?
