Quick Guide to Fly Fishing Reels

Weight A fly reel’s weight also plays a major role in the efficiency of your gear, since it has to properly match the weight of your line and fishing rod. Uniformity in weight helps ensure that there’s enough flexibility for when you cast your line. For 4-weight fishing rods, for instance, you should get reels and lines that also fall under the 4-weight category. Reel Design Next you should consider the design or type of fly reel you’ll need for your activity: standard arbor, mid arbor or large arbor. The SA reel is best used with smaller river rods or traditional cane fly rods, and they hold plenty of backing. MA reels have better backing, as well as the ability to keep the line in larger loops, to reduce memory. Large arbor reels allow for the best backing ability among the three, and has an excellent retrieval rate.
